For Those Who Don’t Like It Hot

On meeting jazz halfway

Not everyone likes jazz. Yes, we know some too.

“I don’t get it.”
“It’s too chaotic.”
“There’s no melody.”
“It feels… random.”

Fair enough. Jazz does not always offer itself easily. It does not arrive with clear instructions, it does not repeat in predictable ways, it does not ask for your approval.

Most of us were taught to listen for certainty. A clear hook. A familiar structure. A resolution that feels earned and expected. Jazz moves differently. It circles, pauses and leaves things open. Is there something missing or something to be found?

If you don’t like jazz, it may not be because of the music. It may be because of how you were taught to listen. Try this instead. Don’t follow everything. Follow one thing: a piano line, a bass that walks quietly underneath or the brush on the drums that barely announces itself. Stay with it. Let the rest happen around you. You are not meant to understand everything at once. No one does.

Jazz is not a puzzle to solve. It is a conversation. Sometimes you enter late. Sometimes you don’t catch every word. But if you stay long enough, you begin to feel the tone. And tone is where meaning lives. You don’t have to like all of it. No one does. Start somewhere softer. A voice that almost speaks instead of sings. A trumpet that hesitates. A piece that leaves space between notes.

There are many doors into jazz. Some are quieter than others. And if it still doesn’t work, that is also fine. Not everything is meant for everyone. But sometimes, what we resist is simply unfamiliar timing. A different pace. A different way of being with sound.

There is a moment, often subtle, when something shifts. What once felt distant begins to feel intimate. Not because the music changed. But because you did.

Jazz does not insist,It waits. And if, one day, you find yourself slowing down enough to meet it, you may discover
that it was never asking you to like it. Only to listen a little differently, and breathe.
